We use it just as a proxy to our app servers (j2ee).
It is a new app so only 500 - 5000 hits a day.
No issues with it at all. (SSL & Proxy work like a charm)

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache
  --with-ssl=/usr/bin
  --enable-ssl
  --enable-proxy
  --disable-include
  --disable-negotiation
  --disable-dir
  --disable-imap
  --disable-actions
  --disable-speling
  --disable-userdir
  --disable-status
  --disable-autoindex
  --disable-asis
  --disable-info
  --disable-cgid
  --disable-cgi
  --disable-alias
  --disable-proxy-connect
  --disable-proxy-ftp

As far as I know there is no really 'big' difference between 1.3 and 2
(yes config is different and so on) but at the end no BIG change.
I think Apache2 for Windows changed way more.

Just wondering how stable/usable Apache 2 is. I've heard good and bad
about it... Thinking of upgrading.

I have had no problems running various apache 2.0.x versions on linux and
openbsd. I would recommend apache 2 for any new installs, but if apache
1.3.x is doing the job sufficiently, I'd say there's no major reasons to
upgrade, other than for the fun/hobby of it.
