I would say that there are three main distros:

-Fedora
 -RPM Based
-up2date, YUM, and apt-get are used to upgrade/install packages
-SuSE
 -RPM Based
-YOU, and apt-get are used to upgrade/install
-Mandrake
 -RPM Based
 -urpm* is used to upgrade/install

If you are a bit more advanced and feel a little adventurous:

-Debian
 -uses the DEB package format
 -apt-get to upgrade/install
-Slackware
-uses the Slackware tgz package format
 -swaret to upgrade/install
-Gentoo
 -Source based distro
 -Emerge to upgrade/install
