Yes, this article, this kind of article, is allways very valuable in pointing 
out where we programmers have assumed things that are simply not there with 
the actual users of a program. I am sure, the result of articles like this 
would be the implementation and the correction of the functionality amiss. 
Also it's an indicator for us in the clug, that the next short-lecture should 
be about printing_systems/CUPS . The fact that cups installation clobbers lpd 
and associated setups, is a very strong indicator, that a migratory package 
would be needed, that would work both-ways to preserve the settings and 
convert them. 
So, Suggestion:
        A CUPS config / LPR-LPD config lecture for next month ....
