I read the article, and I would say, that it makes some good points for some of the software some of the time. The level of generalization is far too high for my liking. ESR seems to have a knack for that.

In my experience:

* some open source software needs GUI improvements.
* some closed source software needs GUI improvements
* some closed source software have implemented great GUI ideas
* some open source projects have implemented great GUI ideas

Reality is, open source has become a tremendously rich eco-system, where some things shine, and others don't.
Maybe CUPS and other printing systems really do need some serious GUI improvements, but what is it with generalizing into open source?

If anyone thinks that WiFi on XP is a sweet GUI, sorry it is a convoluted GUI, and when it doesn't work right away, I pity your poor soul.

Unfortunately, high level generalizations are at the root of much injustice. Too bad, that ESR is falling into that trap. I have the feeling, he keeps doing that.

ESR is a drama queen. sometimes he gets it Right(tm), but even then he puts on his best prom dress. unlike me, who's always calm and pragmatic. ;-P

User levels don't work. Panel space is valuable. Most users aren't coders.
Odds on that answering your question: too high.
