Perhaps I should have been more clear (sorry). There is no Xserver on this machine. It goes blank after a time, but the monitor is still lit. I keep it in my bedroom, so it produces a substantial amount of light at night, considering it's black. I tried the solutions above. Xset didn't work due to the lack of an Xserver (understandable) and setterm did nothing at all (no error message).
