Some corrections, clarification, and help regarding linux on _old world_ Macs:

I just realized that most PPC distros don't support old world Macs at all. The G3-5 (new world) chips are all supported, but the 680*0 (68k) systems (that's LC 580, April 1995 and earlier) just aren't popular enough.
After filtering through my bookmarks, I found http://www.linux-m68k.org/ which would probably be very helpful to those looking to run *nix on their 68k boxes. Aside from the 3 distros (RH, Debian, Whiteline) listed on the above site, you can always tweak and compile an existing distro.

It might also be interesting to try Linux From Scratch.

Of course, that's if you have a bit of spare time and know your way around these things.
Now, for those who are ready to move, but don't want to get rid of their current Mac OS, you can get BootX.

OldWorld ROM systems (pre-1999) do not support yaboot, so BootX is the only option. This means, to run linux on a pre-1999 computer, a MacOS partition is needed. I installed YDL on my OLD G3 Laptop, which has 200M less space because of STUPID MAC OS! It wasn't easy getting the bootloader on there, either. I am still trying to figure out how to do a kernel recompile, since macos cannot read PC/Linux cd-roms (the kernels are stored on the HFS partition).

Read about it and download here: http://penguinppc.org/projects/bootx/ . If you're not ready to move or just need things fixed, I have a pile of Mac OS install disks too.
