Well I was going to try the suggestions, but that would have meant missing the meeting on Wed., so I brought the laptop in to the meeting with me. Szemir then went to work on it and basically with the procedure above which uses a knoppix boot CD, he was able to accomplish the required goal of resetting the root pw.
