For a general C book, I would recommend the following:

The C Programming Language, Second Edition

by Brian W. Kernighan and Dennis M. Ritchie.

Prentice Hall, Inc., 1988.

ISBN 0-13-110362-8 (paperback), 0-13-110370-9 (hardback).

It’s a thin book, but does an excellent job as a reference when you have questions about the C language.

I think many courses which teach C often use this one.

There are a number of books available on programming with C/C++.
Most of them try not to show a preference for a given compiler, but
of course there are some for Windows Visual C/C++, and some for
cc/gcc.
I have an older version of an O'Reily book called Practical C that
get's into gcc, and starts at the very basics.  There is a newer
edition of this one available at Nexus, as well as other related
books.

I have it on good authority (I just phoned Nexus) that they have a book called "Linux Programming Unleashed" on their clearance shelf (ie it will cost about $20).  That book takes you through not only using the compiler but also using make (indispensible), autoconf, intro to the editors, basic system programming (files, sockets, even intro to device drivers).  In short this book combined with a book on C will take you a long way.

Like I said its on the cheap shelf (if you want to reserve it until you look at it then phone them).

What more generalised books on C would you recommend?
(sorry for the message lag time)
