There are a number of books available on programming with C/C++. Most of them try not
to show a preference for a given compiler, but of course there are some for Windows
Visual C/C++, and some for cc/gcc.

I have an older version of an O'Reily book called Practical C that get's into gcc, and
starts at the very basics. There is a newer edition of this one available at Nexus,
as well as other related books.
