Listen to Alan Greenspan sometime. When he says something like, "I
see a slight chance for a possible improvement sometime in the
future", it's enough to send bankers and stock brokers running to
their phones screaming, "Buy! Buy!" He didn't say anything, but they
think he did. Close enough!

Just so for Bill and his hordes. Veiled innuendo, faint praise,
_Fear_, _Uncertainty_, and _Doubt_. It doesn't matter if any of it's
actually true. What matters is people believe that something's not
entirely on the up and up. Vis SCO.

For the record, here's my paraphrase of recent history:

One day in the MIT Labs
   -----------------------

RMS: "Say, thanks for that printer driver but where's the code?
I'd like to change it to better handle my printer."

Some Anonymous Hacker: "It's mine and you can't have it."

RMS: "Fsck you. I'll build my own!"

   One day on comp.os.minix
   ------------------------

Linus: "Hey guys. I've been fiddling with my new '386 and some
code. I've got two processes running, and they've managed to send
a letter back and forth between them."

Some Other Anonymous Hacker: "Cool. Does it do TCP/IP?"

   Linus: "Who?"

Some Other Anonymous Hacker: "No matter. See attached code."

If there's something sinister in there, I'll eat my shorts.
