what motherboard ? are you using any RAID ? I have a TYAN2885 with dual opteron242 with Sil3114 integrated onboard SATA Raid controller with 3 SATA disks. Fedora Core 2 is the *ONLY* distro that ive gotten to work at install time. All other distros (Mandrake, RedHat EL,SuSE ) all require you to install to an IDE PATA drive, then compile the kernel with the libata patch required to run the Sil 3114 chipset, and then systransfer to a SATA disk. Its not everyone's cup of tea though. Again, if you want to dual boot with windows and linux, then you can forget about RAID0. Windows on the Tyan2885 uses a weird proprietary RAID0 striping that is unreadable to Linux. Hardware RAID1 on the Sil3114 is *really* slow - in fact when i had Raid1 on windows 2000, i was getting a paltry 5-8mbps disk to disk transfer speed ! You are better off completely disabling the RAID functionality of Sil3114 and using software RAID on linux instead. > William Astle > > > _______________________________________________ > clug-talk mailing list > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca > -- Public Key: http://pgp.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0xF1A7DB80 _______________________________________________ clug-talk mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca
