You can create proprietary initrd which loads needed modules,
that are not precompiled into kernel itself with
the help of RedHat utility called

mkinitrd

It has i help and I do not think it will be very complicated
to use it. Try to use it and if you experience any
problems, tell me and I'll try to advice with the exact
issuses.

Hey Gang,

I have this HP Proliant DL320G2 equipped with weird ATA-RAID controller. LSI Logic sent a source code for the driver and it has to be loaded from initrd. But in order to compile it, I need the system up and running. However before I can install the system, I need the driver. It's a Catch-22 situation, isn't it?

So, can I compile it on any system and then move the module? Are there any
special requirements for this? The kernel versions should match, I presume.
Anything else?

And my question #2 would be: which distro will allow me to easily insert the module during the installation process? I am planning to only have DHCP and NTP on this box, so it can be virtually anything.

Thanks!
