The best way to do this is to format the hard drive / partition in question.
This is true most anytime you are installing an OS.  While it is possible to
avoid the formatting, my personal experience says you are only asking for
trouble if you don't do so.  Especially if you are trying an "upgrade" of a
Window's OS.
