Sorry keeling and kline, I could not reply you guys email coz I could not receive them. In the last email about no "init" command, I figured it out. Of course, I logged in as root by "su". The reason is my RH9 default shell is BSH rather then CSH, after I switched to CSH, it works! It looks like BSH doesnot support init command but Csh does! Thank you again guys, it's good to know this stuff. BTW, I tested "init 5" and ctrl. - Alt. F7, they both work for me, turn me back to X from console.
