since the list has been pretty quiet i figured i'd spam it with KDE news ;-)
(speaking of KDE news, there are often interesting stories @ dot.kde.org)
KDE 3.3beta1 has been released! head on over to download.kde.org, pick a
mirror, go into the unstable/3.2.91/ directory and select your OS (or source,
if you are of that persuasion).
it's rather stable, though i have found a few crashes in beta1 in Konqueror
(closing tabs too quickly) and KMail with disconnected IMAP ... nothing major
and definitely worth checking out, in particular:
Kopete has really shaped up, with file transfers and nifty visual effects in
the contact list. oh, and it doesn't crash anymore either; at least it hasn't
crashed on me in a long time ;-)
Kontact is quite slick these days as well; a marked improvement over 3.2.
there are groupware set up wizards for eGroupware and SUSE's OpenExchange
(SLOX) in the beta; the Kolab wizard will be in the next beta.
Visually, the Plastik theme has become even more stunning with very nice tab
hover effects and "active text edit" ala MacOS X.
For konqi, spring loaded folders (in browser mode only; not spatial mode,
thanks Apple! *grumpy aaron*) make a debut and video thumbnails are back.
There's "find as you type" support (press '/' then start typing!).
For the programmers, Python, Ruby, Java and javascript (!) bindings... =
Lots of other improvements and bug fixes (and new bugs, i'm sure ;)!
Check it out...
also... i'm sure most if not all have heard of Scribus and K3B, but here
aresome of the following lesser-known, 3rd party KDE apps that i highly
recommend:
Apollon: THE P2P client for Linux, much as K3B is for CD burning IMHO. it
even comes with a SUPER cool Next, Next, Next, Finished wizard for building
it FROM source!
amaroK: like WinAMP, but for Linux. kick-ass play list, effects, support for
network streams, and more.
Filelight: a graphical `du`
KPlayer: very nice frontend for mplayer. KMplayer is also very good, but i
prefer KPlayer's interface.
SMB4K: the power-users graphical interface to client-side windows file/print
sharing
Digikam: cool digital camera software.
have fun and enjoy =)
