After me adventures with the S3 Unichrome, I decided to head down to Memory Express and pick up an MSI FX5600XT-TD256. It was easy to install (just pop it into the AGP slot) and even easier to find the drivers for. Since I was using gentoo, I issued the following command:

emerge nvidia-glx

A short while later, the drivers had been installed.

opengl-update nvidia

And Hardware Acceleration was working. If everything could be that simple, then I'd say Linux was ready for the desktop.
