<snip>Yup... but for their merit, 99.9995% of their customers are dummies :) I spent some time on the helpdesk there, and know what kind of questions can come up.Not that I'm on Telus's side for this one, but, they have always
disallowed running Servers on the network in the customer agreement,
same as shaw, but they finally setup some technical blocks to make it
work. I was running a similar setup on Shaw for a while, but, I was
fully aware that it was outside of the accepted use policy, and if they
told me to shut it down, or blocked the ports, I couldn't really
complain too much... Now I've moved to a chroot-jail on a co-locate
box, and I'm happer with that setup by a long shot :)
It still sucks though. I think telus is trying the MS approach, trying to be
the 'ISP for dummies'. A LOT of people out there don't know how to protect
themselves, so telus figures it's up to them. I just upgraded to shaws
'extreme' high speed, have no ports that I know of blocked, and have seen
4000+ K download and 100+ K upload speeds. Maybe if telus sees a mass exodus
of people [who also tell them why they are switching] they'll shape up.
Technically its against the user agreement, but IMHO if you keep your
bandwidth within reason they shouldn't just arbitrarily shut you down. It's
like getting a ticket for going 1KM over the speed limit...
They're weighing the good of the many vs the needs of the few. A little misguided in their approach, but if they can save, 5% on bandwidth by turning off those ports, that turns into a huge savings in bandwidth as well..
