Have you thought of putting -X in your USE flag and emerge -u world? That 
should recompile your stuff minus X-necessities. It'll also safely remove the 
packages that have X stuff in them. Keep your distfiles dir clean and [I 
think] all X remains will dissappear [perhaps over time, as your packages get 
updated].
