The advantage of VI is that it's on every system.
Nano, emacs, pico, etc are all optional. Everything has VI. With one major,
notable exception, Gentoo. Which is why I think it's stupid beyond words
that Gentoo doesn't use it.

I have to agree with you on this one, but I don't really mind too much,
since it is better than all other distros IMHO.
