The sound system has a test mode, the center channel is definitely hooked up 
and able to put out sound. Checking in YaST shows me that the center channel 
is set to 100 yet when the test audio clip runs it doesn't come out of that 
channel. Unfortunately, the clip is just music and I don't know if it is 
encoded to put out to a 5.1 sound system setup. I do have a separate volume 
control for the center channel but that also doesn't see to make any 
difference when playing a DVD.

I did try different speaker configurations in Xine to see if I could force it 
to play the center channel audio through the other speakers but this was to 
no avail.

Good suggestions but I'm still stuck. Hurm.
