regarding the Linux part:

try this Google search (make sure the URL is on one line, just in case the email sending/receiving process has split the rather lengthy URL)
http://www.google.ca/linux?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=sony+digital+camera+howto&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

note the use of the Linux specific Google search!

regarding memory devices - not a big deal; pick a camera you like - including Sony, as long as it's USB capable and acts like a USB disk,
http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/USB-Digital-Camera-HOWTO.html#AEN33
the list is likely quite old, and not complete for newer cameras.

regarding the resolution::
Good prints require much better resolution than good computer images; good TV or DVD images require the least, HDTV resolution is up to the equivalent of a 17" monitor resolution..

2 megapixels is more than enough, if only publishing to computer or TV or DVD viewing

3 megapixels and better starts giving you excellent prints up to 5" x 7", (assuming the picture was taken at the max resolution); 6" x 10" prints even look ok, but not quite as good as film based images.

5 megapixels gives you excellent images, even at 8" x 10" printing.

Having mentioned the above rules of thumb, the mega pixels alone, do not tell the entire quality story (see good post from Owen).

Digital zoom is useless (since the image becomes grainy / pixelated), use only optical zooming (assuming a reasonably good lens), therefore more optical zoom capability is better Optical zoom is really nice to have. Instead of digital zoom on the camera, zoom in when you post process on your computer, if desired. I always disable the digital zoom!

Regarding Christmas, only buy the camera the day before you start using it; camera price/performance is similar to computer price/performance. So if you're really only going to open the camera at Christmas, wait with your purchase. Of course, if Christmas is more of a logical event, rather than an event on a real calendar, that thought doesn't apply :)

Have fun shopping!

Hi gang,

I'm looking to get some Christmas shopping done early but have 0 clue about
digital cameras. I'm not big on getting ripped off, so I figured I'd ask
here. My first question is about the 42 million different types of flash
cards out there. Which ones have readers that work in Linux and which
don't? From what Google tells me CompactFlash is probably the way to go but
that seems to limit which cameras you can buy. What about Sony memory
sticks? SD? xD Picture Card? etc...

The Memory Stick is a proprietary memory device, currently only used in devices made by SONY. The current issues are USB devices and work with all recent kernels. After loading the usb-storage you may mount them as SCSI devices, often as /dev/sda or /dev/sdb.For older laptops see the appropriate pages at Linux-on-Laptops.

Thanks, me. :)

The OT part of my post is....

Which brand names? How many Megapixels for a decent picture?

ANY input/experiences are appreciated.

Nick
