Yeah, I thought it looked kind of new to me... anyway, I even asked my friend 'google' if it knew anything about it. By the way, when using this trick, I suppose I shouldn't have any other drives on the system when booting to a floppy or cd? The thing is that this drive in question is a firewire drive.

I think I have the command wrong... it should probably be "fdisk /mbr". : : Shawn : : -----Original Message----- : From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] : Behalf Of J. Running "fixdisk : /mbr" form a command prompt (boot from a bootable CD/floppy) can sometimes : be used to restore corrupted partition tables. It's my understanding that : it anlyzes the drive to recreate the partition tables, so it might help in : your case. : : : : On the other hand, I've been lucky enough to not have to work at this : level for some time (or very often), so I'm sure my info may be lacking... : : : : Shawn : : : : -----Original Message----- : : From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] : : Behalf Of J. I believe they call it a sector copy. : : : : : : This won't help you at all in terms of recovery, and it'll take FOREVER : : (and : : : this is from a stage 1 Gentoo user), but it'll allow you to PROBABLY : : recover : : : what you already have in the event that you make it worse. So think of : : this : : : as a sketchy backup of a sketchy disk. Keep that in mind. It certainly : : : doesn't mean that you're safe. I'd still work from the assumption that : if : : : you lose the HDD, then the data is also gone. But this MIGHT help. : : Maybe. : : : If you're lucky.... It certainly won't hurt, and it MIGHT help. So : : : personally, I'd do it. : : : : : : Your Mileage WILL vary. : : : : : : Kev. : : : : : : : : : _______________________________________________ : : : clug-talk mailing list : : : [EMAIL PROTECTED] : : : http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca : : : : : : : : : : : _______________________________________________ : : clug-talk mailing list : : [EMAIL PROTECTED] : : http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca : : : : _______________________________________________ : : clug-talk mailing list : : [EMAIL PROTECTED] : : http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca : : : : : : _______________________________________________ : clug-talk mailing list : [EMAIL PROTECTED] : http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca : : _______________________________________________ : clug-talk mailing list : [EMAIL PROTECTED] : http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca : _______________________________________________ clug-talk mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca
