Yeah, I thought it looked kind of new to me... anyway, I even asked my
friend 'google' if it knew anything about it. By the way, when using this
trick, I suppose I shouldn't have any other drives on the system when
booting to a floppy or cd? The thing is that this drive in question is a
firewire drive.

Rafael.

: er... I think I have the command wrong... it should probably be "fdisk
/mbr".

:
:
: : Have you tried the simple "fixdisk /mbr" yet?
: :
: : It's been awhile but I seem to remember the FAT, FAT32 and NTFS storing
: their partition information on the master boot record. Running "fixdisk
: /mbr" form a command prompt (boot from a bootable CD/floppy) can sometimes
: be used to restore corrupted partition tables. It's my understanding that
: it anlyzes the drive to recreate the partition tables, so it might help in
: your case.
: :
: : On the other hand, I've been lucky enough to not have to work at this
: level for some time (or very often), so I'm sure my info may be lacking...

: :
: :
: : : I'd personally suggest starting with Ghost.
: : :
: : : Clone the entire HDD. I believe they call it a sector copy.
: : :
: : : This won't help you at all in terms of recovery, and it'll take
FOREVER
: : (and
: : : this is from a stage 1 Gentoo user), but it'll allow you to PROBABLY
: : recover
: : : what you already have in the event that you make it worse. So think
of
: : this
: : : as a sketchy backup of a sketchy disk. Keep that in mind. It
certainly
: : : doesn't mean that you're safe. I'd still work from the assumption
that
: if
: : : you lose the HDD, then the data is also gone. But this MIGHT help.
: : Maybe.
: : : If you're lucky.... It certainly won't hurt, and it MIGHT help. So
: : : personally, I'd do it.
: : :
: : : Your Mileage WILL vary.
: : :
: : : Kev.
