Have you had a look at F.I.R.E. (http://biatchux.dmzs.com) or Plan-B (http://www.projectplanb.org)?? They are both bootable distros geared toward data forensics/recovery.
I've had some success using one of them (can't remember which) on a friend's XP hdd to retrieve some of her data.
