Hi Dave,
These units do have on-board sound.
That being said when I tried to boot from a Knoppix CD with one of these units it did not seem to pick up the sound hardware. Mind you I did not spend any time trying to get the sound to work as I did not intend to use the box for a desktop application.
As a desktop machine running a GUI such as KDE these units are probably a little bit low on ram and hard drive space to provide reasonable performance for all but basic applications.
While you could add more ram and a bigger hard drive, you would probably be better off paying a bit more for a higher end machine with a bigger hard drive, more memory and possibly a faster processor.
