You can't really win, if you run old ROMs you probably can sync properly, but of course you can't run modern Zaurus applications.
My preferred method of backing up Zaurus data is:
- use the tkc.rom's backup-utility to backup important files to SD.
- use SCP to grab the files from the Zaurus (most ROMs include an SSHd).
- (get SMB setup on the Zaurus and while on the cradle the Zaurus will be seen as a Windows share on your network)
