setting up LDAP replication is amazingly simple. it's a 5 minute (if that) 
job. that way if the primary server goes south, your systems can fail over 
gracefully to the secondary. it's also rather nice for when you have multiple 
physical locations but don't want to rely on your Internet/VPN connection 
being up and low-latency all the time.

i'd also add that a benefit of LDAP over NIS is that virtually _everything_ 
server side has optional LDAP support these days. the same cannot (and will 
not) be said for NIS.
