In addition , some SMTP servers can be configured to enable port 587 for authenticated SMTP. So that is another workaround available for getting an email client with the Telus network to talk to SMTP servers outside of the Telus network.
For example in sendmail the following configuration option in the M4 file enables port 587 for authenticated SMTP users:
<SNIP>
dnl # The following causes sendmail to additionally listen to port 587 for dnl # mail from MUAs that authenticate. Roaming users who can't reach their dnl # preferred sendmail daemon due to port 25 being blocked or redirected find dnl # this useful. dnl # DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=submission, Name=MSA, M=Ea')dnl
</SNIP>
Not sure, if Qmail and Postfix have something comparable, maybe one of our recent workshop "graduates" knows? :)

"* Make sure Telus is not blocking port 25 on the package in question if you intend to run SMTP servers or clients, which have to connect to the outside of the Telus network..It seems that for most home style packages they are doing that now. I'm not sure, if for example for business packages with dynamic IP addresses they are still doing that. Shaw is not blocking port 25 (at least not yet), even for home packages."
Ran across this with a friend's e-mail setup.
He uses Telus for his internet connection (home account high speed), and besides his Telus e-mail, he has two other e-mail addresses he connects to that are external to Telus.
He has no proplem connecting to the pop servers of the external accounts, but could not connect to the SMTP server for his respective external e-mail accounts.
I changed his configuration so that all e-mail, regardless of what his return e-mail address is set at, to send through Telus' smtp server. So far there has been no issues with this from Telus as he is connected to their network while doing this.
Hope this helps anyone that is having this problem.
