I just installed ubuntu on my testing box, and so far: it seems pretty
sweet. The GNOME desktop has a nice theme, and the default install is
very adequate for the average user (using OpenOffice, Firefox, and
Evolution). The install was easy, other than my custom partitioning. I
am unsure of how it handles GRUB configuration, but it booted when I
told it to. It might not have given me a choice because I didn't have
another OS installed. After the first boot, it updated the packages
automatically, so I'm running the most current version. So far, I would
say that this will become my distro of choice. I would also say that it
would be a good beginner distro, compared to pure Debian.

Have any others tried it?

Regards,

Andrew
