I like Eclipse, but vi and javac are sometimes easier for a little
project like an applet.

Cory Syvenky posted this to the list a couple weeks ago - it's got
links to some good, free Java books:

And you can't go wrong with java.sun.com.  They have a lot of example
code, newsletters, that sort of stuff, along with the Java Tutorial,
which will get you started right from scratch.
