Any time I hear about a system "freezing up" the first thing I check is the video drivers. I would suggest grabbing the latest Linux drivers from the vendor's website. This may be Gateway, or if the laptop is using an ATI card, then visit the ATI website. You may have to do some investigation to determine the exact make/model of your video card (though this is normally indicated in the specs for the system).
Suse does a fairly decent job of installing the correct drivers, but sometimes some extra attention is needed (like the nvidia drivers). Hope this helps.
