On that topic, I'll suggest something we did with the Libranet-users
mailing list. Go to groups.yahoo.com and create a clug-talk-ot (off
topic) list. Those who're interested in that sort of thing can
subscribe. Post it there and those who're interested will see it. It
doesn't have to bother those who don't want to bother with off-topic
posts. You can configure yahoo to automatically forward list posts to
your regular (non-yahoo) mail address.
The nice thing about it is:
- The disinterested aren't bothered. The moderator won't be forced
to moderate. When he does have to moderate, he'll have somewhere
to send the discussion to.
- The interested can set up their systems to feed the clug-talk-ot
messages right into their existing setup. They'll see no change
whatsoever in the range of posts, at the same time that the
disinterested will no longer be bothered by OT posts.
- This eliminates off-topic cruft from clug's list server.
This has completely eliminated OT related whining on LN-users, and
helped to keep people involved who would otherwise have left.
