Since this was initially posted just before the list died, I'd thought I'd post it again.
---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jason Louie <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Mon, 8 Nov 2004 20:48:30 -0700 Subject: The *BIG* One To: CLUG General <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Okay this was mentioned in the Exec. Meeting and now brought to the list for more ideas and brainstorming. Recap: The execs have agreed that we should have a yearly BIG event. Not an installfest, not a meeting but a full blown CLUG fair. The event we were thinking of would have to be held in a community centre or a gym where booths and/or sections would be set up for diffrent things. What would make this better than other events? o The event is held once a year and thus giving a time period that would generate a desire for such an event. o This type of event is more appealling to bigger sponsors. Redhat, SuSE, Mandrake.... would be more inclined to offer support, (products and maybe even finiacially,) for an annual event rather than a monthly hand out. o More people can be pleased more often. o This will be held on a weekend so more people can attend, (not on a weekday.) o Local sponsorships would have oppertunity to show their stuff, (peddle products.) o It's the BIG One! What can the event have? o Sponsors - We should have them there with booths as a thank-you for their current support. Sales booths, presentation booths, (maybe videos and such.) o Presentations - A stage can be present to have various presentations through out the event. o Sections can be done for Education / Business / Development / Installation (this is not an installfest but having a section for installations might be nice)... o Linux boxes - Have 10 computers with vairous distros, not just the big named but some smaller names too. o A CLUG challenge - have teams of people, give them an area where they need to finish a number of tasks. 4 hour challenge to get web-server, file server, centeralized authentication, firewall... We can make this very interesting. o Food - Generally we need some sort of food outlet for these things. What would be needed? o A place that would be big enough and with a place big enough we would probably be spending some money on this. But hopfully sponsors can help out with this. Maybe charge $20 a booth. Also having a entrance fee of $2 would also help. Fees may vary and will later be detirmined when things are more solid. o Sponsors - we can approach more sponsors on this. o Computers - Sponsors can be apporched with this. o Generator - with the number of computers that might be running a generator might be needed for power consumption. o Presenters - This is where you come in. :-) o Volunteers - This is where you come in. :-) What do you guys think on this? I'm thinking it will take at least 6-8 months of planning and organizing for such an event. I would project that at LEAST 60 people would attend an annual event since that is our monthly group turn out and I'm sure that we'll surpass this with proper advertising and with bigger sponsors.
