Here's what I see. There are no beginners left on this list. When is the last time that even Cameron posted here? He was a beginner, and he was confident enough to speak up. We're a list of people who work with Linux daily. As a rule, we either know the solution when things come up, or we know how to find it without the help of the list. So we gather here simply because we have a common interest. Problems that we can't solve ourselves are very rare. And I'd be willing to bet too, that in some cases, we also suffer from posturing. I don't want to post onto this list that I have a question that I can't solve, because I like that people think I'm smarter than I really am. So I'm happy to help, but I'll rarely post a question. I'm sure I'm not alone in that. Beginners, on the other hand, see this list as a bunch of whining experts. And they're too intimidated to post. Lets be honest. Short of Kin, when have we seen someone new post a question on this list? I'd bet that's because we (as old timers) are setting up a situation which isn't conducive to encouraging questions. It looks like this isn't a place to post them, and it certainly looks as though this isn't a place for newbies, when in fact, there's a core of 20 or more here who would love nothing better than to help people taking their first steps with Linux. Unfortunately, the older ones set the tone for this group. Changing it to a different list won't change that. If there is going to be change, it needs to start with the us. Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror. We all want to be helpful, and a large part of our frustration and distraction (into politics, or whatever else) is due to the fact that there's nothing else for us to do here. People don't post questions because they just see bitching. What needs to happen is that we need to be comfortable with silence. If it's a slow day on the list, then so be it. That doesn't mean that we need to bitch about SCO. It doesn't mean that we need to bitch about Gmail, and it doesn't mean we need to bitch about RH. It means we should just keep quiet for a bit. Then questions won't be lost in the noise. Intentionally or not. And yes, I recognize that I'm as guilty of this as anyone else. Perhaps more than most.
