Yes and no. Often software libraries are released under the LGPL license. You are allowed to compile software using LGPL libs without releasing your software as GPL. However you would need to distribute your software as a separate entity from the Libs.
True - thanks for the clarification. Our legal counsel has recommended against do this and to find an alternative to GPL license. To be totally conservative, we don't use any open source software at all with our commercial product. On the other hand, I fully support open source and GPL in the tools we use.
