DistCC allows a person to take advantage of the horsepower of the computers around them by having them share the load of compiling software.
Personal example. I have a server that's an old Celeron 333, and compiling anything takes forever on it. Lets say 1 hour to compile apache (I'm making that number up). I also have 5 P4 desktops around the house, and generally, only 1 or 2 are in use at a time, and even then, utilization is usually around 5%. So I set up DistCC on all of them, and now, when I compile apache, rather than taking an hour, it takes 11 minutes, during which time all the machines run at about 90% utilization. That means I've drastically improved the perceived performance of this server without spending any money. It also means that I receive value from my P4s, even when there is nobody sitting at them and using them. Kev.
