Hmmm.. I thought I WAS using xdm, but maybe not... But that's still part of the problem - how do I change from using xdm to kdm, or kdm to gdm, etc...
I know this is basic X setup, and probably missed something simple. I'll have to dig into this again later - things got to a point where I was spending too much time on this, so I just installed kdm, and the base kde tools, and the other apps I needed. Turns out that by not selecting the default KDE install (when installing Suse), then selecting the elements I needed, I saved a ton of space. I'm sure I can save even more, but I'm happy with things right now - I have just over 3 GB remaining out of the 4.13 GB available. Thanks everyone for the support.
