I had tried Skype about 4 months ago, and it worked really good. It is available for Linux, Mac, Windows, and PowerPC. It is free to make calls from Skype account to Skype account, or you can buy credits to phone land lines.
It is the same people who designed kazaa. The calls, or file transfers are encrypted end-to-end. It has very good abilities to wiggle its way through firewalls. I was impressed with the sound quality. I was only using the sound card - speakers and mic.
