Hehehe... I have a laptop with nearly the same specs. I use it for a
test machine and portable computer, (after all, that is what a laptop
is for.) I use it to transport files and work on projects when I
don't have a computer / network access. Also it is great for checking
out networks and to do presentations on. Also giving it to your
daughter to play with is a good idea and will boost here Exp with
computers, (and keep her from playing aka damaging your main
computer.)

I have about a 6 Gb for HDD so I partitioned it as follows:
2Gb Win98
1.5Gb Backup FAT32
2Gb Linux
0.5Gb Swap

I have Knoppix, (Debian Minimal install, installs less than 500Mb if I
recall,) With IceWM as a windows manager, (really fast for a slower
machine). I have dillo as a web browser and Mozilla for the odd case
where a site requires a more complete web browser. I have some basic
tools and even apache and KDE3.3 installed for testing and the Kgames
for my kids. Having cvs installed recently on my server and laptop
allows me to develop on the laptop even if offline and allows me to
upload the changes to the repository when net access is available
again. I can also access most of the KDE menu with IceWM and can do
mostly what is needed on a standard desktop.

In the Backup partition I make an image of the Windows partition and
use that as a test system with programs and such and when^H^H^H^H^H if
things break reimage the partition and you have a fresh system again.

Hope this at least gives you some ideas and please don't junk the
computer. There is still life in the beast. My whole home network is
composed of 5 active computers from a P90 to my blinding fast computer
of 533MHz, (that translates to 0.533GHz).
