My reply was meant to be on list, just a mistake on my part (my webmail client has replaced kmail/kontact for everyday use, with some unexpected twists). Thanks for the heads up.
Skype uses p2p to transfer the voicedata (from my limited use it looks like direct pc to pc), the central server is for the IM part of the program. http://www.skype.com/products/explained.html seems to indicate that calls are "intelligently route(ed)" to keep latency down. I would imagine that if calls originate on the same subnet behind the same NAT device, then they would route directly to each other. I have no idea how skype actually works so that is just a guess.
The other links point to projects which can be entirely self contained if required.
The asterix project sounds like what you want, since you can use some handsets and a number of pc clients. Imagine dialing your sons local to tell him to go to bed. A bit of a complicated approach though.
Gnomemeeting is supposed to be more straight forward, though I have never actually used it.
Cheers,

Skype is peer to peer for the voice communication part. The IM part is not really different from AIM/MSN/ICQ etc. MSN already does the p2p voice stuff, though there is no skypeout equivilent yet.
Perhaps using P2P was wrong on my part. I was referring to a direct connection from one computer to another. With instant messaging services and Skype it appears that you have to go through a server so it's not direct. Correct me if I am wrong.
There are a lot of options in this area. If you are interested in VoIP check out http://asterix.org http://gnomemeeting.org http://vovida.org
I had found both of these and may look into trying them out. I'm really after something for an internal network. How cool would it be to call up my son in the basement without involving any external bandwidth? You see where I am going with this?
BTW, taking this conversation off-list may not have been the wisest choice...
