This type of stuff actually happens quite often, but due to the nature of how it is done, you rarely realize it is happenning. Transparent HTTP proxies are probably the most common method of this. You would be very surprised at how many of the webpages you download do not actually get served from the webserver, but a caching proxy stuck on the Telus or Shaw network, and possibly networks in between. Akamai has made a boatload of money doing precisely this.
