Hello,

Well that thread sure shot off, I took a peak through some of the post, they all have valid points. If it was me personally I would not use webmin. I find that by sticking with the command line when I started I learned a lot more and had a better understanding of how my system worked. This allowed me to fix problems quicker and become more efficient with Linux.

For remote access I would use SSH and I will tell you my personal reasons and you can make your own decision.

1. SSH will most likely be available every where you go, any job or position where you are expected to remote access a system would have SSH. They may not have Webmin and may not be able to install it. So you might as well learn the command line.

2. XForwarding -- Look it up. Upon making a SSH connection, XForwarding can automatically be enabled. This will allow you to run X Windows apps on the remote host. So for example you are sitting in front of a Linux box and logged into a X windows sessions (window manager / desktop / ....) you can simply make a SSH connection to any other Linux box, and if it has the proper lib's installed you can run X apps from that system with the display being local.

So if you have a old laptop ... you could start a light weight window manager and have all the apps running on your server at home. Who needs webmail when you have you "Thunderbird" mail client running at home directing the display on the laptop.

Any ways ... that is what I would do ... but it is up to you.

Michael.

I would like to remote access a Linux box. I have seen a number of people do it but not sure on what you are using. I am aware of VNC but it does seem to lack security. I have heard of SSL but am unsure of some of the pro's and con's of the various methods.

Would someone be able to enlighten me as to where I should be looking for additional information.
