I started in '96. with 486 (actually [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and windows3.11. Year (or maybe little more) later, friend gave me RedHat 6.2 (hedwig, if my memory is correct) and that's how it started for me. Before that (counts as a prehistory) was Sinclair ZX Spectrum (a.k.a. Timex, here in North America). It had 16K ROM anb 48K RAM. Also, there was DIY computer named "Galaksija" (Galaxy), one of the first in former Yugoslavia. 4K ROM, 6K RAM. Later I used its keyboard (modified) for ZX Spectrum.
