Yep, that sucks, probably better off buying something of the shelf. I wonder if one of those USB to IrDA dongles could be used for your application (or even the IR port on the laptop if it exists). Although these devices are intended for IrDA data transfers and speak an actual protocol, I suspect all the "smarts" is really in the software driver. You might be able to co-opt one of the USB IrDA drivers (from Linux anyway) for one of these devices and use it for dumb IR communication instead. I've never tried this so who knows if it would work, but those dongles used to be really cheap so no big loss either way. Just some food for thought.

From what I understand, IrDA is a data transfer protocol which is higher speed but much shorter distance, whereas the Ir Remotes have at least a dozen or more protocols and are slower and longer distance. There are some Ir Remote receivers that terminate with a serial port but have not tried those yet.
I have been thinking about using a PIC processor but have not looked for a sbc that has usb built-in or the ARM which we know runs Linux. The first option would likely be cheaper but I have not found a sbc yet. (Linux is not required but is a nice to have as it can be used for so many other things.)
Thanks for those thoughts just the same.
