it's getting better within open source projects, at least the ones i travel 
in. in KDE we have a number of female contributors, from coders to usability 
experts to documenters. i work with them on a regular basis and it's truly an 
open environment for them these days. it used to be a bit rough for them in 
the unmoderated areas like IRC, but even that's cleaned up in recent years 
and they are treated and respected as peers. 

and it's not just the women who have benefited from this: many of these women 
have unique skills and viewpoints that they bring with them to the project 
and their contributions are invaluable..
