I think you missed this bit from my original post :

And in fact, an awful lot of stuff is multivector these days. There is not really any plain-jane-simple-virus these days. You've got stuff that finds multiple remote explots, gets in, inserts stuff into IIS that would then infect some random IE-using visitor's pc, and so forth.

Mmm, more like their main purpose is to create bot nets that the bot controller can then sell the services thereof to spammers. Zillions of spam comes from these bot nets now aways. They're also used to target online casinos and betting establishments and thereby blackmail them into paying a "leave us alone" fee.

Organized crime (spam, extortion) is more the order of the day now.
