To be honest, the issue of what distro is best, is likeI said earlier,
a matter of proficiency. With Slackware, there is no hand-holding. If
you know what programs/libraries do what, then you can fine-tune your
installation down to individual programs/libraries. Granted, if you
choose this route, there is no short-cut; you have to manually choose
which programs/libraries to install and resolve any dependencies on
your own; but once the installation is completed, maintaining the box
is rather easy--again, you have to know what you're doing because there
are no "automation tools"... With Slackware, nothing happens unless you make it happen and--if I may be so bold--System V style initiallization is by far the easiest to work with, with a minimum of scripts to worry about...But again, that is a matter of preference and your own definition of "easy" and "trouble-free"...
