Think I have found the answer, Clue was that it was only happening with Kmail and Konqueror, Firefox didn't seem to suffer. in Yast>System>etc/sysconfig editor changed KDE_USE_IPV6 to "NO" rebooted and so far all is well. obviously Shaw doesn't do IPV6 yet.
