I am planning to order an Asus Z71V. Basically it is centrino with a PCI
Express video card (Nvidia as ATI has been spotty in the past). That may be
overkill however.

At any rate there should not be too many problems as long as it has reasonably
modern hardware. I have helped to install linux on a number of laptops
recently. From a P4 based hp pavillion, to an older dell P3 700. All work
reasonably well or better (the i815 video is not the greatest on the old dell,
but it is good enough for non-3d use).

Quoting William Astle <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

I'm considering purchasing a laptop on which I'll be running Linux. Does anyone have any recommendations for a laptap? I don't need anything terribly spectacular since I'm not so much into the gaming and all that jazz. I just need something that will work with X. Any pointers/recommendations are welcome.

I am not, however, in the market for a used laptop.
