Hi All,
Let me preface this somewhat lengthy post with a comment I overheard made by
one of our member to another a while ago. This comment was unsolicited and
upon deeper reflection really struck a chord with me.
"It's too bad that we're only preaching to the converted".
As Shawn mentioned previously we had the chance to chat informally with
representatives from four of the Post Grad Institutions in the city while
attending Convergence. The executive had been discussing how to improve our
image and increase the public's awareness of CLUG. It was decided to
approach the "big four" in the city and attempt to forge a working
relationship that would be mutually beneficial to all parties involved. This
would give us varying venues in the city and maximum exposure to students
and the public. We felt that establishing these partnerships would give us
the stability we needed if we are to be able to plan Installfests', Tech
Days, workshops and meetings etc.
Yesterday, we met with DeVry's Dean of Business & Systems as well as their
employer relations person. They have bought in 100% and are very excited at
the prospect of developing a working relationship with them. Their IT
Manager is also prepared to work with us to ensure our needs are met "while
keeping within their IT guidelines".
Today I received conformation that The University of Calgary's Program
Director - Computing and Information Systems Continuing Education, Kenneth
Fung has enthusiastically come onboard and wants to meet us to view the
facilities and work out dates for the next Installfest. I'll set up a
meeting for next week to hammer out the details but suffice to say that they
are on our side also.
While we will have to do our share to ensure that we promote these events to
the public I suspect that internally these institutions will be more than
willing to promote them internally. DeVry wants info from us for the
internal TV system and the Student Newsletters etc. The U of C has the
Gauntlet, CJSW, the Student's Union etc that we may be able to utilize.
Where does this leave us? Well, simply put, two down, two to go. We are
waiting for replies from both SAIT and Mount Royal and I'll update you on
this as things develop on that front.
I think that this is an exciting time for CLUG! With these venues and the
increased exposure we will have gained CLUG will be able to run "First
Class" Installfests' targeted at both students and the general public. My
goal is to see a room full NEW faces, all installing Linux distros with CLUG
members assisting where needed. I know that many of you are stalwart
supporters of Linux and FOSS both as individuals and as members of CLUG. I
hope that you will continue to do so when called upon to do so as we run
these events. Perhaps we can change that members' opinion when asked what
CLUG really does!
Food for thought,
Dave Watkins

Excellent Dave. Good work!
