I installed Mandrake 10.1 on a new, "bare metal", PC. That seemed to
go well.
Then I put a Samsung 80 GB ide drive into a NexStar 3 enclosure,
partitioned it as one big partition and formated it as ext3 using the
wizard in Mandrake. When I rebooted with the NexStar plugged into a USB
2.0 port Konqueror wouldn't start and when I rebooted again KDE
wouldn't start. Also lots of things "failed" at reboot.
After some effort, including erasing the HD in the PC, I managed to
re-install Mandrake 10.1. Now I would like to use the NexStar/Samsung
external drive to move files from my old PC to my new one but I'm afraid
I'll have the same problem as before.
I suspect the problem lies in the way a set up the NexStar/Samsung
drive. When I assembled it I followed the recommendation in the NexStar
manual and left the "General pin setting" as "Master". Should I have
changed it to "Slave"? Also, I didn't change any BIOS settings: I just
hoped Mandrake would auto detect the new drive. Should I have changed a
BIOS setting?
I would appreciate advice.
